Skaters are the heart and soul of our league, actively participating in bouts and training sessions. Skaters are required to pay monthly dues and meet attendance requirements to remain an active member. No prior skating experience necessary.

Referees play a crucial role in officiating bouts and ensuring fair play on the track. No skating experience is necessary to become a referee, and training is provided.

Non-skating officials contribute to the smooth running of bouts in various roles such as scorekeeping, penalty tracking, and more. This role is open to individuals who may prefer not to skate but still want to be involved in roller derby.

Volunteers assist with various league operations, events, and initiatives, contributing their time and skills to support the league's activities.

joining requirements

To join Strong Island, individuals must be at least 18 years old and possess a passion for roller skating and a willingness to learn. Our rolling recruitment model means that interested individuals can join at any time throughout the year, with recruitment bootcamp events held periodically to welcome new members. Loaner gear is available for those who need it, but all skaters must have their own mouthguard.

All genders are welcome.

training program

No prior skating or roller derby experience necessary! Our league offers training for new skaters, referees, and officials to help them develop the skills and knowledge needed to excel in roller derby. During our cadet (new skater) training program, new skaters can learn and progress at their own pace under the guidance of experienced coaches and mentors.
